Abstract
This article is based on a speech presented on 6 July 2000 as part of International Co-operators' Day in Japan. The speech presents a future view of co-operatives and co-operation in the 21st century. It provides a brief overview of the history of co-operatives and points to the current and future challenges as well as making some predictions, including a sector made up of four main types of co-operatives with the possibility of further new modes of co-operation. It challenges us to put our knowledge of the co-operative form to work to test its continuing relevance and to develop it to meet the needs of ordinary people living in a post-industrial, information-based, and global society.
