Abstract
This short paper puts forward that to successfully defend existing co-operatives against predators and support the development of new co-operatives to take the movement forward, more strategic thought about co-operation in Ireland is needed. The paper puts forward that Stafford Beer's viable systems model is a useful analytical tool to begin to look at the components of co-operatives. The author's draws on his experience of analysing weaknesses in co-operatives and formulating appropriate responses.
